Bambu Lab AMS vs AMS lite: specifications, compatibility and which printer each belongs to

Nobody sells a P2S with an AMS lite. Every combo pairs the AMS lite with an A1, an A1 mini or an A2L, and pairs the box AMS with a P1S, an X1 Carbon, a P2S, an X2D or an H2. That is not a marketing decision. It falls out of the specifications.

Here are the specifications, then the reason the pairing works.

Printer compatibility

AMS lite fits: A1, A1 mini, A2L. Nothing else.

AMS fits:

  • X1 series and P1 series: native
  • A1, A1 mini, A2L: requires the A Series AMS Hub and printer firmware 01.07.00.00 or later
  • P2S: requires a P2S buffer adapter, already fitted on combo units
  • X2D, H2D, H2C: plug and play for colour

Bambu gives one reason for the AMS lite exclusions, repeated word for word across the X2D FAQ and the H2C FAQ: fundamental differences in the feeding mechanism and buffer structure. The AMS lite stops driving filament once printing starts and lets the extruder pull; the box units keep pushing and need a buffer to regulate tension. That is also why an A-series printer needs the hub before it can take a box AMS.

Materials each unit will feed

AMS lite: PLA, PETG, ASA, PET, PA, PC, dry PVA, dry BVOH, PP, POM, HIPS, Bambu PLA-CF.

AMS: the same list plus ABS, Bambu PAHT-CF and Bambu PETG-CF.

Refused by both: TPE, generic TPU, damp PVA, damp BVOH, Bambu PET-CF, TPU 95A, and any third-party filament containing carbon or glass fibre. These go through an external spool holder.

Accepted by both: Bambu's TPU for AMS, a 68D flexible, feeds normally through either unit per Bambu's TPU printing guide.

One inconsistency worth knowing about, because both pages are official and current. The AMS lite specification lists Bambu PETG-CF as not recommended, alongside Bambu PLA Glow and generic glow-in-the-dark PLA, on the grounds that they cause loading errors and accelerate wear. The AMS lite FAQ says Bambu PETG-CF is compatible. Take the cautious reading: it will feed, and it will wear the feeder channel and PTFE faster while it does.

Why the AMS lite is paired with the A1 series

The A1, A1 mini and A2L are open-frame printers. No enclosure, no heated chamber.

That rules out the materials that need one. ABS and ASA warp and delaminate without a hot chamber, which is why ABS is on the AMS material list and not on the AMS lite's. PA, PC and the soluble supports are on both lists on paper, but in practice they are enclosed-printer materials. What is actually left for an A1 owner is PLA and PETG, plus TPU fed from an external spool. We have written separately on which materials do not need an enclosure and on how to pick a filament.

PLA and PETG are the two materials that tolerate sitting in room air the longest. So an open rack with no lid, no desiccant and no sensor is not a corner Bambu cut. It is matched to what the printer can print.

The reverse holds for the enclosed machines. A P1S, X1 Carbon, P2S, X2D or H2 exists to print ABS, ASA, PA, PC and soluble supports, and those are exactly the filaments that degrade fastest in an open room. A sealed box with two desiccant compartments and a humidity readout belongs on those printers, and it is what ships with them.

The AMS lite also wins on the things an open rack is naturally better at. It takes a wider spool window than the AMS, it grips the centre hole so cardboard spools work, and its mechanism is exposed so a snapped strand takes minutes rather than a teardown. Those advantages only exist because it has no lid.

What neither unit does

  • Neither dries filament. No heater in either one. Drying starts at the AMS 2 Pro at 65C and the AMS HT at 85C, covered in our four-way AMS comparison
  • Neither reduces purge waste. Every colour change on a single-nozzle printer flushes the old colour out. That is a property of the nozzle, not the unit feeding it
  • Neither runs without the printer. Both need a powered, connected printer

Putting a box AMS on an A1

It is supported, and it costs more than the price difference suggests. You need the A Series AMS Hub, the correct cables and tube, and firmware 01.07.00.00 or later. Bambu's compatibility guide warns that reusing an X1 or P1 buffer, or the hub from the AMS box, may damage the part and will not be covered under warranty.

You also lose something. Per Bambu's A1 AMS connection guide, the A1 series cannot run an AMS and an external spool at the same time. The external spool is how an A1 prints TPU and carbon-filled filament, so that path closes when the box arrives.

The A2L is the exception to the usual rules here. Per the A2L connection guide, it runs four box AMS units and one AMS lite simultaneously for 19 colours, with the box connection taking one of the lite's four channels. On the A1 and A1 mini the two cannot be mixed, and Bambu states there are no plans to change that.

If you are not buying either

Multi-colour hardware is worth it when you run multi-colour jobs regularly. If the honest count for the year is a dozen prints, the unit plus the hub plus the cables plus the PTFE replacement cycle is a lot of hardware for a dozen prints. Which one to buy

  • A1, A1 mini or A2L owner: AMS lite. It matches what your printer can print, takes more spool types than the AMS and costs less
  • A1 series owner who needs more than four colours: box AMS route, and budget the A Series AMS Hub with it. Compare the AMS against the AMS 2 Pro before committing, because the 2 Pro adds a heater
  • P1P, P1S, X1 Carbon, X1E, P2S, X2D or H2 owner: the AMS lite was never an option. Your choice is AMS against AMS 2 Pro
  • Buying a combo now: the AMS lite does not move to an enclosed printer later. If you expect to upgrade, that is a cost the price tag does not show, which is part of why we argue against the A1 mini as a first printer
  • Single-colour functional parts only: neither. A spool holder and a sealed tub with silica gel do more for you, as we argued when ranking which printer features are worth paying for

Common questions

Can an AMS lite work on a P1S or X1 Carbon?

No. There is no adapter, hub or firmware that enables it.

Is the AMS a filament dryer?

No. Sealed box, two desiccant compartments and a humidity sensor, no heat. It slows moisture absorption and reports the level.

Will cardboard spools work?

On the AMS lite, generally yes, because it grips the centre hole. Check the hole is 53 to 58 mm. On the AMS, expect trouble, because the spool sits on rollers and cardboard sheds dust.

Does an AMS lite transfer to a new printer?

Only to another A1, A1 mini or A2L.
