What each box actually does
AMS Lite: a colour changer, and it is honest about that
Four spools on open pegs, each slot with its own feeder motor and a rotary spool holder that turns up to 150 degrees to keep tension when filament is pulled back. No enclosure, no lid, no desiccant slots, no humidity sensor. The AMS Lite takes spools 40 to 68 mm wide with an inner diameter of 53 to 58 mm, which is the widest window of the three and the reason most 500 g, 750 g and 1 kg spools drop straight onto it, cardboard included.
It reads Bambu's RFID tags, it does automatic filament backup (when one spool runs out mid-print, it switches to another of the same material and keeps going), and it is the easiest of the three to clear when filament snaps in a tube. What it does not do is protect anything. Your filament sits in room air.
AMS: a sealed box with no heater
The original AMS is the same four-spool idea inside a gasketed box with a twist-lock lid, slots for desiccant packs, and a humidity readout you can see in the app. That is the entire upgrade over the Lite: it slows moisture down and it tells you how bad things are getting.
It chains, up to four units for sixteen colours. It is fussier about spools than the Lite, and cardboard spools inside it are a known source of dust and grief. Clearing a snapped filament means pulling every spool, undoing two screws and opening the shell, which Bambu's own documentation puts at three to five minutes.
AMS 2 Pro: a dryer that also changes colours
This is where the feature list stops being incremental. The AMS 2 Pro actively heats to 65C. A motorised air vent opens during drying to push damp air out, then seals shut so the box holds its dryness for weeks. The spools rotate 30 degrees every five minutes so the whole roll dries evenly rather than just the outer wrap. RFID sets the drying profile automatically for Bambu filament, so you are not looking up temperatures.
Around that sit the mechanical upgrades: a brushless servo feed motor rated 60 percent faster than the original, ceramic filament inlets at 1200 Vickers hardness (Bambu quietly conceding the old inlets wore out), and tool-free access to the filament tubes from the top instead of that three-to-five-minute teardown. It chains to four units, and mixed with AMS HT units it goes to 24 filaments.
One correction worth making, because it is the single most out-of-date claim in every AMS 2 Pro review still ranking on Google: you can now dry and print at the same time. At launch you could not, and reviewers hammered it for exactly that. Bambu's current AMS 2 Pro FAQ confirms simultaneous drying and printing is supported, and drying can be started remotely from the Devices page in Bambu Studio. The catch: if the printer is powering the unit while printing, drying power gets throttled to protect the print, so the external switching adapter matters if you want both at full strength.
AMS HT: the one nobody asks about
Worth knowing before you compare prices, because it changes the maths. The AMS HT holds a single spool and dries at 85C instead of 65C. That 20 degree difference is not cosmetic - it is the line between drying PLA and PETG and actually drying nylon, PC, PVA and carbon-filled filament. It also has a bypass outlet, so it can dry and feed the flexible and fibre-filled materials the other three refuse to take through their feeders. Its power adapter comes in the box, because it always needs external power.
Feature by feature, where they actually split
Moisture handling
- AMS Lite: nothing. Open air, room humidity, no sensor to even tell you.
- AMS: passive. Sealed volume plus desiccant slows absorption and buys you time between drying cycles. It cannot pull moisture out of a spool that has already gone soft.
- AMS 2 Pro: active. 65C, vented, rotating, RFID-configured, and it holds the dry state afterwards instead of just delaying the inevitable.
- AMS HT: active at 85C, one spool, covers the engineering materials the 2 Pro cannot fully dry.
That 65C ceiling is a real limit and Bambu states it plainly on the spec sheet: ABS, ASA, PA, PC, PVA, BVOH and anything carbon-filled need more heat than the AMS 2 Pro can give them.
Colour ceiling
- AMS Lite: four colours, permanently. One unit per printer, no chaining, and no firmware update is going to change that.
- AMS and AMS 2 Pro: four units, sixteen colours. Mix AMS 2 Pro units with AMS HT units and Bambu's ceiling is 24 filaments.
Spool tolerance
The Lite wins this one outright, and it is the most underrated line in the whole comparison. It takes the widest range of spool sizes and handles cardboard without complaint. The AMS 2 Pro wants 50 to 68 mm wide and 197 to 202 mm across; the original AMS is happiest with 1 kg plastic spools and unhappy with cardboard.
If you buy budget Indian filament that ships on cardboard, that is not a footnote. It is the reason plenty of A1 owners keep the Lite even after buying a Pro.
All of them refuse the same materials for the same reason: soft TPU, TPE, wet PVA and anything with carbon or glass fibre goes through an external spool holder, not through the feeder. The AMS Lite FAQ is stricter still and rules out PLA Glow and third-party fibre-filled filaments too. If flexibles are most of what you print, a wall or table spool holder will do more for you than any of these boxes.
The bits you feel on a Tuesday
- Clearing a jam: Lite is easiest, AMS 2 Pro is next (tubes from the top, no tools), original AMS is the teardown.
- Feed speed: the AMS 2 Pro's servo is rated 60 percent faster than the first-generation motor.
- Swap speed: the Lite has a feeder motor in every slot, but it works differently from the box units. Bambu's AMS Lite workflow documentation says the feeder drives loading and unloading and then stops - once printing is underway, only the extruder pulls filament. The box units assist feeding throughout, which is exactly why they need a buffer or hub on an A1 and the Lite does not. Reviewers have argued the Lite's shorter, simpler path makes per-layer colour swaps quicker as a result. Nobody has published a clean head-to-head, so treat that as a plausible edge, not a fact.
- Wear: ceramic inlets on the 2 Pro against plain ones on the older units.
The humidity maths is different here
Now the part the American and British reviews cannot help you with, and the part that decides whether the premium is worth paying.
Active drying is a nice-to-have in a dry climate and a genuine problem-solver in a wet one. India is mostly the second thing. Per IMD figures for Mumbai, average relative humidity at Colaba sits at 85 percent in July and 84 percent in August, and averages 71 percent across the year. The pattern holds down the whole coast: annual averages of 75 percent for Mumbai, 76 for Panaji, 78 for Thiruvananthapuram, 71 for Kolkata, 70 for Chennai.
Leave four open spools on an AMS Lite through a Navi Mumbai monsoon and you are not storing filament, you are conditioning it. PETG turns stringy, PLA gets brittle and snaps inside the tube, and you spend a Sunday wondering why prints that came out clean in February have gone bad in July. That is not an AMS Lite defect - it is a room problem the Lite was never built to solve, and it is why moisture is the variable most people ignore when they pick a filament.
There is a bonus for Indian buyers buried in the fine print. Bambu notes the AMS 2 Pro only reaches its full 65C when ambient temperature is above 25C, because below that it loses too much heat to the room. In most of India, most of the year, that condition is simply met. The unit performs closer to its rating here than it does in the countries where it gets reviewed.
Flip it and the reverse is just as true. In Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Delhi, where annual humidity runs in the 50s and 60s, printing PLA in an air-conditioned room, drying is a luxury. Sealed bags and silica gel get you most of the way there for a few hundred rupees.
What the price gaps actually buy
Indian reseller pricing as of July 2026, from authorised sellers:
- AMS Lite: roughly Rs 23,000 to Rs 25,000
- AMS (original): roughly Rs 31,000
- AMS 2 Pro: roughly Rs 46,000
- AMS HT: roughly Rs 20,000
Two steps, and they are very different in quality.
Step one: Rs 23,000 to Rs 31,000, and what Rs 8,000 buys
A sealed box, desiccant slots, a humidity number in the app, and chaining past four colours. That is the complete list. No heater, no vent, no servo, no ceramic inlets, and worse spool tolerance than the cheaper unit you started with.
This is the step to skip. Rs 8,000 for passive storage is defensible in isolation, but it is not a purchase in isolation - it is Rs 8,000 spent on the way to a Rs 15,000 gap you have not closed. You end up with the previous generation of a product line that is still moving, missing the one feature that actually changes outcomes. Buy the original AMS only if you already own one, if you are adding a fourth unit to a chain where only the first needs to dry, or if you find a discount steep enough that it stops being a compromise and becomes a bargain. At anything near AMS 2 Pro money it is the wrong buy, the same trap we described when we went through which Bambu machines are worth skipping.
Step two: Rs 31,000 to Rs 46,000, and what Rs 15,000 buys
Everything the first step did not.
- Heat. 65C active drying with a motorised vent and rotating spools. This is the feature. Everything below is a bonus.
- State, not delay. The sealed box holds its dryness for weeks after a cycle instead of merely slowing the decline.
- RFID drying profiles. No looking up temperatures per material.
- A 60 percent faster servo feed, which shows up on every multi-colour job you run.
- Ceramic inlets and tool-free tube access, which is maintenance time you get back over the unit's life.
- It fits everything. Every current Bambu printer, so it moves with you when you upgrade the machine instead of becoming a spare part.
Per rupee, step two is the one that earns its money and step one is the one that does not. If your budget only stretches to the middle, the honest advice is to keep the Lite and put the Rs 8,000 into filament and sealed storage until you can make the full jump.
The accessories that are not in the box
This is where people get caught, and it belongs in a price discussion rather than a footnote. The AMS 2 Pro ships with the unit and a 6-pin cable. That is it.
Running it on an A1 also means buying the A-series AMS Hub. Running it on a non-combo X1 or P1 means a filament buffer or hub, a PTFE tube coupler and a 4-pin cable, which Bambu bundles as an upgrade compatibility kit. And using the drying function on any A1, X1 or P1 needs a switching adapter per unit. Several thousand rupees, on top of a number you thought was settled.
So for an A1 owner the real comparison is not "Rs 23,000 versus Rs 46,000". It is closer to Rs 23,000 versus Rs 50,000-plus, on a printer that cost Rs 31,000. That is the number to sit with.
And it is the number that should prompt a different question: how many multi-colour prints do you genuinely need in a year? If the honest answer is eight, or twelve, or "a few gifts and a nameplate", you are about to spend more on a filament changer than the printer cost, to run it a dozen times. That is the point where sending us the file is simply the cheaper decision. The waste nobody puts on the box
One feature all three share, and it surprises new multi-colour printers every time: none of these units reduce filament waste. They create it.
On a single-nozzle printer every colour change means retracting one filament, cutting it, feeding the next, then flushing the old colour out of the nozzle into a purge tower or a pile beside the plate. Bambu's guide to reducing waste during filament changes is worth reading, and its advice comes down to fewer changes per layer and smarter flush volumes. A busy four-colour model can burn a meaningful fraction of a spool on purge alone.
The only real fix is a second nozzle, which is why the H2D can skip the purge tower on two-material prints. No AMS in this comparison solves it, at any price.
Now the wiring, briefly
Features first, but the plumbing does eliminate options, so here it is in one place.
- AMS 2 Pro fits everything - A1, A1 mini, A2L, P1P, P1S, P2S, X1 Carbon, X1E, H2D, H2S, H2C. It is the only unit in the lineup that does, which is a real part of what the premium buys.
- AMS Lite is A-series only - A1, A1 mini and A2L. It is not compatible with the X, P or H2 series, and it cannot be chained or mixed with the box-style units.
- Putting a box-style unit on an A1 needs the A-series AMS Hub and printer firmware 01.07.00.00 or later, because those units push filament during printing and the hub is what keeps the tension in range. Bambu's A1 connection guide is explicit that you must not reuse an X1 or P1 buffer for the job - it can damage the part and void the warranty.
- Drying on an A1, X1 or P1 needs a switching adapter per unit. H2 and P2 series printers can power one unit for drying on their own.
- Drying needs the printer on. There is no standalone mode on the AMS 2 Pro or the AMS HT - both need a 6-pin connection to a powered printer in drying mode.

Where each box earns its money
Keep the AMS Lite when the printer is a hobby machine
Four colours, cheerful, takes almost any spool including cardboard, and it is already in the box if you bought an A1 or A1 mini combo. If you print PLA, live somewhere reasonably dry or bag your spools between jobs, and four colours is enough, buying anything else is spending Rs 25,000 to fix a problem you do not have. Just do not expect it to protect filament. It was never trying to. Skip the original AMS unless the discount is serious
It is the middle option that solves the least per rupee: sealed storage without heat, previous-generation internals, worse spool tolerance than the cheaper unit. Fifteen thousand rupees below the 2 Pro sounds like value until you list what those fifteen thousand rupees actually add.
Buy the AMS 2 Pro if you print anywhere humid, or print anything serious
Buy it if you are in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Goa or Kolkata and you print through the monsoon. Buy it if you print PETG or engineering materials rather than only PLA. Buy it if you own more than one Bambu printer, because it is the only unit that moves between all of them. Buy it if you want to chain past four colours. Add the switching adapter in the same order, or you will be buying it a month later anyway.
Consider the AMS HT if drying is the whole problem
For a certain user this is the smartest Rs 20,000 in the lineup. One spool, 85C, adapter included. If colour is already handled by an AMS or AMS Lite and your actual problem is that nylon and PC come out of the bag damp, the HT fixes that for less than half the price of an AMS 2 Pro, and it will feed the fibre-filled and flexible filaments the others refuse.
Questions we get asked about this
Is the AMS 2 Pro worth Rs 15,000 more than the original AMS?
In a humid Indian city, yes, and the deciding feature is heat rather than the convenience upgrades. Passive desiccant delays moisture; 65C removes it. In a dry, air-conditioned room printing only PLA, the gap is much harder to justify.
Does the AMS Lite dry or protect filament at all?
No. There is no enclosure, no desiccant slot and no humidity sensor. It is a colour changer. Pair it with sealed bags and silica gel and it is perfectly good at the job it was built for.
Is 65C enough for the filament I use?
For PLA, PETG and their support materials, yes. For ABS, ASA, PA, PC, PVA, BVOH and carbon-filled filaments, Bambu says the AMS 2 Pro will not fully dry them and points at the 85C AMS HT instead.
Can the AMS 2 Pro dry filament with the printer switched off?
No. Drying needs a 6-pin connection to a powered-on printer in drying mode. If you want a dryer that works independently of the printer, buy a dryer.
Which one is best if I mostly print single-colour functional parts?
Honestly, none of them, and that is a legitimate answer. A dry box and a spool holder cost a fraction of any AMS. These systems earn their keep on colour and soluble supports; if neither is in your workflow, the money is better spent on filament.
