Bambu Lab AMS vs AMS 2 Pro: specifications, drying limits and which one to buy

Unlike the AMS lite, these two are a real choice. Both are sealed four-slot boxes, both chain, and both fit the same printers. Nothing about your machine decides it for you.
What has already been decided is what ships in the box. Every current Bambu combo, P2S, X2D, H2S, H2D and H2C, pairs with the AMS 2 Pro. The original AMS is the legacy unit that came with X1 Carbon and P1S combos, and the X1 Carbon is now discontinued. So the AMS is what you already own, or what you find at a discount, and the AMS 2 Pro is what everything new arrives with.
Here are the specifications, then the one difference that matters.
AMS specifications
- Size and weight: 368 x 283 x 224 mm, 2.5 kg

AMS 2 Pro specifications
- Size and weight: 372 x 280 x 226 mm, 2.5 kg
- Housing: ABS / PC, sealed with an electro-magnetic air vent
- Slots: 4, chaining to 4 units, and mixing with up to 8 AMS HT units for 24 filaments
- Spool size accepted: width 50 to 68 mm, outer diameter 197 to 202 mm. Identical to the AMS
- Drying: up to 65C
- Active moisture discharge: supported. The vent opens to expel damp air during drying, then seals
- Auto-rotate drying: spools rotate automatically during a drying cycle so the whole roll dries, not just the outer wrap
- RFID drying profiles: drying settings set automatically for Bambu filament
- Humidity sensor: yes, plus temperature, to screen, Bambu Studio and Bambu Handy
- Feed motor: permanent magnet synchronous brushless servo, 60 percent faster feeding than the AMS. Bambu quotes an average saving of 10 minutes per 100 filament changes
- Filament inlets: ceramic, Vickers hardness 1200
- Clearing a jam: tool-free access to the filament tubes from the top
- Desiccant check interval: on the colour indicator, or roughly every 4 to 6 weeks of continuous use

What is identical between them
- Slot count: four each
- Spool window: 50 to 68 mm wide, 197 to 202 mm outer diameter on both
- Material list: PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PET, PA, PC, dry PVA, dry BVOH, PP, POM, HIPS, Bambu PLA-CF, PAHT-CF and PETG-CF on both
- Refusals: TPE, generic TPU, damp PVA, damp BVOH, Bambu PET-CF, TPU 95A and third-party carbon or glass filled filament on both
- RFID and filament backup: on both
- Purge waste: unchanged. A colour change flushes the nozzle either way
- Standalone operation: neither works without a powered, connected printer
The spec sheets diverge on drying, feed hardware and maintenance access. Nothing else.
The heater, and what 65C actually covers
A sealed box with desiccant, which is what the AMS is, slows moisture absorption and reports a humidity number. It cannot remove moisture from a spool that has already gone soft. A heater can. That is the whole argument for the AMS 2 Pro.
But 65C does not cover everything. Bambu marks ABS, ASA, PET, PA, PC, PVA, BVOH, POM, HIPS and the CF variants on its own AMS 2 Pro spec sheet as needing a higher drying temperature, and states the AMS 2 Pro cannot dry them completely. Its recommendation for those is the AMS HT at 85C. What 65C actually buys:
- PLA and PETG: 65C fully covers them. Bambu's filament drying table lists both at 45C for 12 hours in an AMS 2 Pro
- ABS, ASA, PA, PC, PVA, BVOH and CF variants: partial. It will help and it will not finish the job
- Holding a dry state: this is where the AMS 2 Pro is genuinely different. The vent seals after a cycle, so the box holds its dryness for weeks rather than merely slowing the decline
Note the awkward result: the filaments that most need drying are the ones it cannot fully dry, and the ones it fully dries are the two that tolerate room air best. The heater is a tool for keeping PLA and PETG reliably dry through a humid season, not a rescue device for damp nylon. What drying costs to actually use
Drying has a power requirement that varies by printer, and the adapter is not in the box.
- X1, P1 and A1 series: these printers do not supply drying power at all. Every AMS 2 Pro unit needs its own 24 V 4 A Switching Adapter, sold separately. Three units drying means three adapters
- P2S and X2D: the printer can power one unit for drying. On the P2S, while it is doing so, the printer cannot heat or move, so printing stops unless that unit has its own adapter
- H2D and H2S: the printer can power one unit for drying. Additional units drying at the same time each need an adapter
- Any printer: drying requires a 6-pin connection to a powered printer in drying mode. There is no standalone mode
Drying while printing is now supported, started from the Devices page in Bambu Studio, subject to a minimum firmware version, per Bambu's AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT FAQ. When the printer supplies the drying power while feeding or printing, that power is automatically reduced to protect the print. Older reviews saying the two cannot be combined are out of date; older reviews calling the adapter optional are also wrong.
Budget the adapter with the unit. Bambu's switching adapter guide warns that a third-party 24 V 4 A supply may damage the device and affect warranty cover.
Printer compatibility
AMS 2 Pro: compatible with every current Bambu Lab printer. The accessories differ per printer, not the unit.
AMS:
- X1 series and P1 series: native
- A1, A1 mini, A2L: requires the A Series AMS Hub and firmware 01.07.00.00 or later
- P2S: requires a P2S buffer adapter
- X2D, H2D, H2C: plug and play for colour, with no drying function since it has no heater
One cable warning applies in both directions. Bambu states that the 6-pin cable from the first-generation AMS can cause unstable communication if used with an AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT, while the new cable works fine with the old AMS. If you are mixing generations, use the new cables.
You can also run an AMS and an AMS 2 Pro together on the same printer for printing, which is worth knowing if you already own one and are adding the other rather than replacing it.
The upgrades that are not the heater
These are real but none of them would justify the gap on their own.
- Servo feed motor: 60 percent faster than the first-generation motor, quoted by Bambu as around 10 minutes saved per 100 filament changes. On a heavy multi-colour print with hundreds of swaps, that adds up. On a two-colour nameplate it does not
- Ceramic filament inlets: Vickers hardness 1200. Bambu conceding that the original inlets wore
- Tool-free tube access: the AMS 2 Pro opens from the top. The AMS needs the spools out, two screws undone and the shell opened, which Bambu itself puts at 3 to 5 minutes
- Longer desiccant interval: 4 to 6 weeks against 2 to 3 weeks
- Higher ceiling: 24 filaments mixed with AMS HT units, against 16 for the AMS
What the gap costs in India
Roughly Rs 27,000 to Rs 31,000 for the AMS, against roughly Rs 37,700 to Rs 46,000 for the AMS 2 Pro, at Indian resellers as of August 2026. Call the gap Rs 10,000, plus the Switching Adapter if your printer is an X1, P1 or A1 series machine.
At source the gap is narrower: 249 US dollars against a typical 299. Landed here the step is proportionally bigger, the usual pattern, and one reason we keep a view on which Bambu products are worth skipping at Indian prices. Prices move often, so check the seller.
If neither is the right purchase
Both of these units earn their money on volume of multi-colour work. If your year is a dozen multi-colour prints, you are pricing a box, a set of cables, an adapter, a desiccant cycle and a PTFE cycle against a dozen jobs. Which one to buy
- Buying new today, for any printer: the AMS 2 Pro. At a roughly Rs 10,000 gap you get the heater, a faster feed, ceramic inlets, tool-free access and the higher colour ceiling. Buying the previous generation of a product line that is still moving is rarely the right call
- You already own an AMS and print PLA and PETG in an air-conditioned room: keep it. Sealed storage plus desiccant plus dry filament habits will do the job. Spend the money on filament
- You already own an AMS and print through a coastal monsoon: the heater is worth it, and buy the adapter in the same order
- Your problem is nylon, PC or CF coming out of the bag damp: neither. 65C will not finish those. Look at the AMS HT at 85C, which is cheaper than the AMS 2 Pro
- You are adding capacity rather than replacing: an AMS and an AMS 2 Pro run together for printing, so a discounted AMS as a second unit alongside a drying-capable first unit is a legitimate combination
- You print single-colour functional parts: neither. A dry box and a spool holder cost a fraction, as we argued when ranking which printer features are worth paying for
Common questions
Is the AMS 2 Pro worth the extra money over the AMS?
If you are buying new, yes, because the gap is around Rs 10,000 and it buys a heater rather than a convenience. If you already own an AMS and only print PLA and PETG in a dry room, the upgrade is hard to justify on its own.
Can the AMS 2 Pro dry nylon and polycarbonate?
Not completely. Bambu marks those materials as needing a higher temperature than 65C and points at the AMS HT.
Does the AMS 2 Pro come with the power adapter?
No. The Switching Adapter is sold separately, and on X1, P1 and A1 series printers you need one per unit to dry at all.
Can I use an AMS and an AMS 2 Pro on the same printer?
Yes, for printing. Use the newer 6-pin cables when mixing generations.
Does either one reduce filament waste?
No. Purge waste is set by having a single nozzle, not by the unit feeding it.
Is the original AMS still worth buying at a discount?
Only if the discount is steep enough to close most of the gap, or if you are adding a second unit for colour capacity where only the first needs to dry. At anything near AMS 2 Pro money it is the wrong buy.
